What is Electrolysis

Please reach us at electrolysissocietyofalberta@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Women and men around the world have benefited from electrolysis for over 125 years. Backed by extensive medical studies and decades of clinical use, electrolysis has a long-established record of safety and effectiveness. Ongoing advancements in technology and technique continue to improve comfort, precision, and results.

Electrologists vary in training, skill, and experience. Successful electrolysis requires exceptional attention to detail, including proper sterilization, precise machine calibration, and a thorough understanding of hair growth patterns. For the best results, it is important to choose a professional electrologist who demonstrates a verified commitment to high standards and ongoing education.

Electrolysis is suitable for all skin tones and hair colours and can be used on virtually any area of the body.

Common treatment areas include:

  • Facial hair, eyebrows, and hairlines
  • Legs, bikini line, Brazilian and underarms
  • Back and chest hair, ears and noses
  • Ingrown hairs and hair shaping

Electrolysis is used by both women and men for cosmetic, grooming, and comfort-related concerns.

There are several techniques used in electrolysis, all designed to permanently disable the hair follicle:

  • Galvanic Electrolysis
This method uses a chemical process involving salt and water within the follicle to create a small amount of lye, which destroys the hair-producing cells.
  • Thermolysis
This technique uses heat generated by high-frequency energy to destroy the cells surrounding the follicle.
  • Blend Method
  • The blend, or dual-action method is a technique that uses galvanic current and low-intensity high-frequency current at the same time. By combining these two currents, the blend method overcomes the limitations of each when used alone, bringing together the thoroughness of galvanic with the speed of high-frequency treatment.
  • These combined qualities make the blend method particularly effective for treating deep, coarse terminal hairs and curved follicles that are often difficult to successfully treat using high-frequency current alone.
  • Your electrologist will determine the most appropriate method based on your hair type, skin, and treatment area.

Electrolysis is supported by more than 125 years of medical research and documented clinical results, confirming its safety and effectiveness as a permanent hair removal solution.

Does Electrolysis Hurt?

If you are considering electrolysis, it is natural to wonder whether the treatment will be painful. This is one of the most common concerns, and one of the most common misconceptions about electrolysis.

When performed correctly, electrolysis is very well tolerated. Most people experience only a brief sensation during treatment, often described as a mild sting or momentary discomfort. This sensation fades quickly and does not linger.

Sensitivity can vary from person to person. The most important factor in minimizing discomfort is choosing a trained and experienced electrologist. Proper technique, equipment settings, and attention to detail all play a significant role in ensuring a comfortable experience.

Equally important is open communication. You should feel comfortable speaking with your electrologist at any time during treatment. A professional electrologist will listen to your concerns and make adjustments as needed to ensure your comfort.

For individuals who are particularly sensitive, additional comfort measures may be offered. In some cases, a topical anesthetic can be used to help make treatment more tolerable.

With the right professional care, there is no reason to fear that electrolysis will be painful.

Your First Visit

If you are ready to leave behind shaving, waxing, creams, and other temporary hair removal methods, your first step should be a consultation with a professional electrologist.

Even if you are considering laser hair removal, beginning with an electrologist ensures you receive guidance from a specialist who understands hair growth cycles, skin variations, and the full range of hair removal options available.

While many laser clinics operate under medical oversight, it is often not a physician who performs the treatment. A Certified Professional  Electrologist is trained to assess your individual needs and recommend a treatment plan and schedule designed to achieve the best long-term results.

This guidance is based on:

  • A minimum of 500 hours of professional training
  • Hands-on clinical experience
  • In-depth knowledge of locally available hair removal options

Some ESA members are trained in both laser hair removal and electrolysis. Even those who are not dual-trained can provide informed, unbiased guidance and recommend reputable services in your area.

If permanent hair removal is your goal, electrolysis is often the final and essential step in treatment. By starting with an electrologist, you ensure your care is professional, informed, and consistent from the very beginning.
